Life Twin
This whole experience reinforced what I already believe: we all have more in common than we think.
I've always believed that things happen for a reason and that it's up to us to make the best out of every situation. This is why.
We just got back from our summer vacation. Initially, I had booked a place in Sayulita, Nayarit - a laid-back surf town near Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco. On the map, it looked just a couple of blocks from the beach. In reality, it was a steep uphill climb - equivalent to 12 stories, according to an app - just to reach the front door, and then more stairs to get to the rooms. The view, thought, was incredible!
Another reality, there was loud construction right next door. The night watchman kept his music playing all night right outside our room, and I barely slept. The next morning, Adriana and I took an early walk on the beach, but when we came back at 7 a.m., the construction noise was already in full swing. We had no choice but to move.
After a couple of days in nearby La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, we end up in San Pancho, Nayarit. And this is where I met Mao Calderón - my life twin.
Mao and I are in our 50s, each with 3 daughters around the same age. And through our conversations, I discovered we share the same passion: to have a positive impact on the lives of those around us. During the pandemic, Mao reinvented himself and, against all odds, started Su Pancha Madre. Watch [this video] where he shares his story.
From the moment we walked into Su Pancha Madre, we felt right at home. The warm welcome instantly made us feel like family. Every dish - from the shrimp with mole, the Mulato, the tinga su pancha madre made from Yaka fruit to the Mar y Tierra (or just Mar… or just Tierra) - every sope was spectacular. But what truly made the experience unforgettable were the conversations before and after each meal. And our time wouldn't have been complete without Lucio and Carolina, who made everything even more special.
Looking back, I'm grateful for the construction noise in Sayulita. This whole experience reinforced what I already believe: we all have more in common than we think. Who would have thought I'd find a life twin in a little beach town?
Have you ever had a similar experience? Have you met a soul mate while traveling? Or found a place where you immediately felt at home? What made it special?
I'd love to hear your story in the comments below.
