Memory Lane
They are part of my life story — experiences I value, because every each one has helped shape who I am today.
Just a few years ago, Adriana made a scrapbook of my life for my 30th birthday. While looking for a picture when I was around ten, I found a page with photos of my cousins and me from when I lived in Mexico City. Seeing those photos made me think about scanning them and giving them to my aunt for her 75th birthday as a belated gift.
As I walked down memory lane — where my selective memory probably filled in a few gaps — I recalled so many wonderful moments: visiting La Marquesa, a forest just outside Mexico City; going to Chapultepec, the park in the heart of the city; playing around the LPG tanks on the rooftop of our apartment building; stopping by La Suiza, the chocolatery just downstairs; cooking with my uncle Mario — where my panza aventurera likely began — and listening to their stories from their travels around the world. I also believe that my interest for traveling and learning other cultures was influenced from them.
But above all, what I remember most in how welcome I always felt in their home. I was one of them at Lago Alberto 442, apartment 25.
The reality is that after we moved to Saltillo 45 years ago, although we stayed in touch, we lost the closeness we once had. But that never diminished my appreciation and love for them. They are part of my life story — experiences I value, because every each one has helped shape who I am today.
This week in Mexico City, I had the privilege of sharing Mexican history, enjoying incredible food, and most importantly, spending quality time with both my immediate and extended family. It will forever remain as one of the happiest moments of my life.
With the start of the holiday season, take a moment to reflect on those experiences that have brought you joy and happiness. Is there someone you’ve been meaning to reconnect with? What memories still warm in your heart? Reach out, and let yourself relive those moments.
